21.77 miles and a difference in altitude of more than 8,343 feet. The first leg of the Gore-Tex® Transalpine Run led from Oberstdorf, Germany, to Lech, Austria. The winning Scotsmen's time was 3:35:09 hours.
Andrew Symonds and Tom Owens, the Scotsmen defending the colors of the „Saab Salomon Outdoor Team,“ would have never expected that they would pull off winning the first leg. After all, "we enjoyed ourselves as we ran and even walked from time to time," said Andrew Symonds. His 27-year-old running mate Owens added, "We took it easy uphill and relaxed on the way down." This is how they covered the distance from Oberstdorf, Germany, to Lech, Austria, in an impressive 3:35:09.3 hours. Thomas Geisenberger and Michael Veit of „Team Dr. Steinbauer“ finished second (3:49:56.0 hours), trailing the winners by almost a quarter of an hour.
