Cliff diving into the port basin: In Hamburg, the Red Bull Cliff Diving Series kicks off a new round. For the spectacle, wildly romantic rocks will be superseded by the cold steel of the Rickmer Rickmers scaffolding.
From a height of 85 feet, 12 of the world's best cliff divers jumped off the Rickmer Rickmers pole, a floating landmark, to plunge into Hamburg's port waters at a speed of 62 kilometers per hour.
Just one of them dared perform a triple-backflip forward dive with four twists. Gary Hunt pulled off the competition's most difficult dive, never before performed by another human. "Practicing this dive from a small height is impossible. At the diving competition in Antalya three weeks back, I tried it for the first time, and today it worked for the second time," said the 25-year-old Briton, who finished first as a result.
